A global community of developers

From maintainers to contributors and companies to nonprofits, people are using GitHub all over the world.

In fact, the only two places where we didn’t see developer communities grow on GitHub in 2022 were Antarctica and Norfolk Island.

Everywhere else, we’re seeing more developers building software on GitHub (and there are still almost 20 developers in Antarctica).

  • 20.5M New developers joined GitHub in 2022
  • India Has the biggest developer population growth
  • 85M+ New projects were started globally in 2022

The worldwide distribution of people on GitHub

In 2022, more than 20.5 million new people joined GitHub from almost every corner of the world.

Outside the United States, we saw some of the largest increases in India, China, and Brazil.

Top 20 communities outside the U.S. are growing

While in 2013, a majority of GitHub developers were based in the United States, we’ve seen that change with massive growth among developer communities across the globe. Notably, the developer community in India continued to see massive year-over-year growth.

India’s population on our platform alone totaled 9.75 million people in the past year—and more than 2.5 million new people in India joined GitHub in 2022. If this trajectory continues, we predict that Indian users will match the current United States GitHub developer population by 2025.

*In parallel with our efforts to make sure GitHub is available to developers in as many countries as possible, we are continuing to ensure free open source services are available to all, including developers in Russia. GitHub is a powerful tool for communications, humanitarian work, organizing for change, and technological advancement. We truly believe in the power of open source and will continue to work hard to keep our platform available and safe for all developers around the world.

Regional spotlights: Where communities are growing the fastest

In 2022, population growth on GitHub surged most among countries in Asia Pacific, Africa, South America, and Europe.

Outside of these regions, we also saw a continued rise in Iranians logging into GitHub (a 21% year-over-year increase, to be precise) following our work from 2019 through 2021 to secure a license from the US government to offer service to Iranian developers. And we applaud the bravery of the Iranian people, especially women, who are putting themselves at risk in pursuit of freedom.

Fastest growing Asia Pacific countries developer communities

Countries and regions in the Asia-Pacific region saw some of the highest year-over-year growth with Hong Kong (SAR) continuing its year’s-long lead largely as a result of its position as a financial and technological hub.

Despite this, India has the largest net population with more than nine million people in India using GitHub in 2022.

Fastest growing African developer communities

Developer communities across the African continent are growing at pace with some of the largest population increases in sub-Saharan and West African countries.

Some of this is likely attributable to a surge in venture capital investment in African startups.*

Interesting Fact

Is there anywhere in the world with a declining number of developers?

It turns out the answer is yes. Antarctica saw several people leave for (presumably) warmer climates in 2022. And who can blame them? 🥶
